Revolutionary Thermal Energy Storage — Melink Zero
Melink Zero is one division of a family of companies founded by Steve Melink to develop and sell clean energy solutions in the United States. Sister company Melink Corp sells building energy efficiency services and products, including the industry-leading Intelli-Hood, while Melink Solar designs and builds on-site commercial solar PV systems. Melink Zero developed a revolutionary new phase change material, in conjunction with the US Dept of Energy, allowing HVAC systems manufacturers to design dramatically more efficient and smaller footprint thermal energy storage systems.
Time for a Website
Melink Zero had their new phase change material but needed a website to get the word out to HVAC companies and other interested parties. They had already produced a great deal of writing and infographics for funding proposals and reports, and had branding in place. The stage was set for us to create a compelling website!
We wrote headlines and teaser text, chose stock photos for two select places on the website, selected from their custom photos and took additional photos for the rest of the website, created a compelling home page design, and filled out content on the inside pages.
The trend for website in recent years has been to design websites “mobile first”. But it tends to lead to boring page layouts so we start with interesting layouts for full-size desktop monitors, then make them responsive for laptops, horizontal tablets, and vertical mobile phones. On the Melink Zero website, the test lab photos on the home page and facilities photos on the experience page required a bit of customization to lay out nicely on smaller devices. It’s a little more work but leads to a better result.
Platform
We use WordPress and Squarespace for websites (and Shopify for ecommerce sites). For Melink Zero we chose Squarespace, which makes it easy to focus on design and usability, with fewer technical needs up front for us and ongoing for the client. Squarespace also makes it relatively easy to do the mobile customization described above! And makes it easy for the client to update the website themselves, although many continue with us for that work, and some move to another agency. This kind of flexibility is important to us for serving clients.
