Infrastructure Improvements

We’ve been taking advantage of the Covid-19 slowdown to review our own marketing and IT infrastructure.

Better File Organization

Our Synology file server has over 1.3 million files! Items more than a few years old are in an archive folder, but current and recent past client files are important to keep well-organized. Our own files had become especially disorganized – we’re organized for clients but sloppy for ourselves! With a little extra time on our hands, we’ve reorganized to make things easier to find.

All files are backed up remotely using Synology Hyperbackup.

Synology Internet Router

For two decades we’ve used the regular ol’ internet routers provided by our ISP. But it’s hard for us for control security, update firmware, etc. So last week we traded up to a Synology RT2600ac router. It’s a whole ‘nother world of security and control – less appliance-alike and more computer-like, with a remote window for configuring settings, installing apps, updating the operating system and more. Synology issues approx ten updates a year and offers a dedicated threat prevention app – vast improvements vs other routers in security and features.

New Website

On the marketing side, it’s time for a new website for ourselves. We love our current site and keep the portfolio, case studies and blog up to date. But it’s about three years old and starting to look like it, as websites tend to do. Squarespace made dramatic improvements in design interface moving from version 7.0 to 7.1 – a bigger leap than the version numbers suggest – and we’ve been using 7.1 for new client websites. So it’s time for us to make a new one for ourselves.

Update: you’re now reading this on the new website! Read more about our  website update process.
