Getting Out the Vote for a Presidential Election
The November 2020 US General Election was the most complex in living memory, and Ohio had an additional factor this election. In previous elections, voters could request their absentee ballots online, but for the 2020 General Election, the Ohio General Assembly added an extra round-trip of printed and mailed forms. Applying online got a printed form mailed to you, which you mailed in to request your ballot, which was then mailed to you, which you then completed and mailed in to vote. You could skip the last mail step by taking your ballot to the dropbox at the county seat Batavia, or by not using your absentee ballot and instead voting early in person at the county seat, or voting on Election Day in person at your precinct location.
Coupled with US Post Office delays and high interest in voting early, uncertainly abounded!
Reaching Voters
We worked with the Clermont County Democratic Party to support their get-out-the-vote effort in Election 2020. Target audiences were registered unaffiliated voters with Democratic and centrist values and registered Democrats. The CCDP had a larger ground game than ever before, but it’s only practical for a county political party to reach a fraction of the voters in person. We used Facebook and Instagram to reach the right voters at the right times with the right messages to help them though this year’s process.
Public records show who is registered to vote, who has requested an absentee ballot, and who has voted already. Different voter groups were shown posts in their feeds with the information they needed. The accompanying text gave a few sentences of information, with links to websites for more complete information. Here are a few of the visuals…
Recruiting Volunteers
In addition to information for voters, we helped the Clermont County Democratic Party recruit volunteers to drop lit on doorsteps and pass out slate cards at the polls.
It’s a remarkable thing that Republican, Democratic, and third party people work together – not always perfectly congenially, but nonetheless together, on Boards of Election as inside poll workers and outside the polls to ensure voters are informed of procedures and elections run smoothly.
